Swelling with use Discussion
Hand or wrist swelling with use is a common problem following a local
injury, and usually resolves spontaneously. Persistent swelling may
indicate an ongoing local inflammatory process, a metabolic abnormality,
lymphatic or venous insufficiency, or other underlying problems. Swelling
may be obvious with local dilation of visible veins, or be subtle with only
a feeling of tightness. Even if a local problem is present, investigation
into persistent swelling may involve a metabolic evaluation with blood
tests, or vascular evaluation to study the condition of the large veins
which drain blood out of the arm. Some patients defy all attempts at
diagnosis and remain persistently symptomatic.
