Medline/PubMed
search tips:
-
First, find the best access page. There
are a number of Medline access points, including Grateful Med, The National
Center for Biotechnology Information, and others, and navigation from the
main Medline page (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/)
can be confusing. Instead, go directly to PubMed (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed/).
-
Second, set up search results so that you
can scroll through all the abstracts on one page, rather than having
to go back and forth between the listing of summaries and the individual
abstracts. Here's a walk through:
-
Go to http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed/
, type in your search words, and click "Go": (Figure
3).
-
Expand the list to show as many as you can
on one page: (Figure 4).
-
Switch from "summary" listing to "abstract"
listing, and then click "display" (not "Go"): (Figure
5).
-
This will produce a long page with all the
abstracts opened up that is much easier to browse. Also, one of the many
nice features of PubMed is links to journal sites, some of which include
free full text access: (Figure 6).
