FULL TEXT ON
LINE ACCESS JOURNALS
An increasing number of surgical journals
publish online versions of their print editions. This allows several avenues
to access full text on line.
-
Interlibrary subscription. Services
such as OVID (50), provide full text
online access to a number of medical journals, including the Journal of
Bone and Joint Surgery (UK) (34).
The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (AM) (33)
takes a middle ground, providing multimedia and interactive features
which augment the print journal.
-
Single user journal subscription. This
access allows the individual print journal subscriber to also access online
versions of that journal. The Journal of Hand Surgery (AM) (37)
and soon both Techniques in Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery (61)
and the Journal of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (31)
will provide full text online browsing of recent journals to subscribers,
including access to illustrations online.
-
Pay per view. This model, used by the
Journal of Hand Surgery (B&E) (36)
and the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (30),
allows users to browse abstracts for free, then purchase access to individual
articles.
Free. There is also is a growing
list of free online journals, including American Journal of Orthopedics
(5), the Internet Journal of Orthopedic
Surgery (26), The Irish Journal of
Orthopaedic Surgery and Trauma (29),
